- IMDB = In-Memory Data Base: more efficient and very fast
- Column based, optimized for searching through huge sets of data in real time, as there are fewer database operations to be performed, e.g. merging tables.
- Simplified data model. Less complex master data and reduction of redundancies leading to a higher degree of standardization and better performance, e.g. in inventory management.
- Integration and cloud. While ECC is a monolithic system that mostly runs as an on-premises solution, S/4 is designed to run in the cloud and use the Business Technology Platform for full integration into other systems.
- Standardization and innovation. S/4 contains an extensive range of best practices that are part of ‘clean core’ solutions. Clean core means that customers use product code without (or with safe) custom code. At the same time, SAP will continuously ship new features and releases. Customers on S/4 clean core will be able to deploy these releases and benefit from an up-to-date system with the latest innovations available to them. These releases and features will not be available for ECC.
